Monosteel Knife Making Course
In a two-day forging course with up to three participants, you will learn to design, grind, harden, and fit your own custom handle to your knife.
Duration: 2 days, from 09:00-15:00 each day
Schedule:
Day 1:
After a brief safety introduction and discussion about the design of your desired knife, we will begin crafting your blade.
Together, we will design the raw blade according to your specifications, and we will assist you with the design and shaping of a chef's, butcher's, hunting, outdoor knife, or a replica/custom piece.
Furthermore, you can choose between carbon steel and chrome steel, as well as various local, tropical, and stabilized woods (for your custom handle)!
Then follows the shaping and grinding with the help of a belt grinder and angle grinder.
After a delicious lunch, we will continue with the rough grinding of the blade.
For this, you will work on the belt grinder for the flat grind.
The first day concludes with hardening in a quality hardening furnace.
Afterward, the blades will be tempered by us in the workshop.
Day 2:
After you have chosen the handle wood for your desired knife, we will begin with the fine grinding.
You will start with coarse sandpaper and work your way up to a very fine grit to achieve a particularly rust-resistant and even surface structure.
Then comes the fitting of the handle: whether full tang or stick tang – you will now learn precise fitting, gluing, and rough grinding on the belt grinder, followed by hand finishing.
At the end of the workday, you will oil and wax the handle and can take your finished, razor-sharp custom knife home.
